On any night when there is not a good freeze of the snow surface, the avalanche hazard from wet slides will increase. Wilderness travelers should pay attention to overnight temperatures when venturing into the mountains this time of year. As we write the update this morning it is snowing again. The last two days have been bluebird with calm winds making for ideal skiing. Thankfully, as the storm wound down, the winds subsided and the temperatures cooled allowing for a blanket of fluffy powder snow to cover the landscape around Tuolumne Meadows. There were also high winds and blowing snow causing drifting, poor visibility, and wind slabs to form. We measured 26 inches of new snow and 2.68 inches of water equivalent during this storm. We anticipate that all buildings that normally transfer to generator power during outages will transfer to backup power during these outages. There has been no updated timetable for the anticipated power transfer for Arch Rock at this time. PG&E has given notice of an outage for all of El Portal from 7PM-8PM on 04/14. PG&E is anticipating that this changeover will occur in the evening, but this is subject to change. Yosemite Utilities Branch would like to remind all that work and/or reside in El Portal, Yosemite Valley, Arch Rock and Badger Pass that there will be up to an 8 hour power outage in Yosemite Valley for PG&E to return the Park to commercial power on Friday 04/14.
